Coalition Urges Continued Federal Investment in Palliative Research
With more Americans living longer and facing complex health conditions, the need for high-quality palliative care has never been greater. In a move to strengthen the evidence base for serious illness care, the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care (NCHPC) submitted written testimony to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, urging continued support for a national palliative care research strategy.
The testimony calls for $12.5 million in FY 2026 funding to sustain and expand the Consortium for Palliative Care Research Across the Lifespan—an initiative housed within the National Institute on Aging and supported by multiple NIH Institutes. This investment would help fill critical gaps in research, from symptom management and caregiver support to addressing disparities in access to care.
The Coalition’s testimony builds on several years of Congressional direction urging NIH to coordinate multi-Institute efforts in palliative care. Continued funding would support early-career investigators, implementation science, and community-informed approaches to care—especially for underserved populations.
