August 7, 2019. Kaiser Health News published an article and tribute to Kathy Brandt, a national hospice and palliative care expert, who served as the writer/editor of the National Consensus Project’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, 4th edition (NCP Guidelines). Kathy and her wife who is a nursing professor at University of Virginia, Dr. Kim Acquaviva, turned their extraordinary journey with a terminal cancer diagnosis into a public conversation about choices at the end of life and invited the world into their own last days of Kathy’s cancer. An article of Kim’s personal experiences as Kathy’s primary caregiver was also published in The Chronicle of Higher Education. The National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care extends our deepest sympathy to Kim and their son, Greyson, and gratitude for their honest transparency that will continue to impact, educate and inspire our professional field and beyond.
